Red Earth

Earth from the nation's center currently fills the skies of some major cities. The photos I've seen of what's going on there are quite amazing; some of it does look like there are bush fires about. Looks like a vision of hell, or perhaps life on Mars. Blood moon for those places tonight.

The dust storms aren't coming this far North though.

Like a girl screaming

There is a slightly sinister air about this place that creeps up upon you. Around us are marshlands and with it the ever present threat of Dengue, hard to find signs warning you of crocks in the water and bats take to the skies as if signaling the coming of Armageddon. It's got a really high crime rate per capita and a sizeable homeless population, to top it all off it's now got the nations highest number of unemployed. Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderfully beautiful place, if you like that warm, sunny, sea air holiday destination sort of place; it's the sort of place that would make for a nice setting to a murder mystery.

It also happens to be very dark; there a many a corner that when the sun goes down, one could sit for hours and have nary a soul notice you. Which brings me now to the screaming. Chances are we've all heard screaming before; most of the time it's someone acting stupid. This is the sort of place where many people come for holiday, and with that you get a whole host of parties and a boozing and all that goes with it. I've heard screaming that was definitely human in the distance before, but decided not to call it in as it was so distant that I would be most unhelpful in being able to tell where it came from exactly; and figured someone closer to it would be better suited to phone it in.

Then there is this other cry.

When someone cries out, there is something simply unsettling about it. No matter what the circumstance; even though on a rational level I know that screaming usually portents something silly, people in distressing circumstance more often go about with a dazed look of disbelief.

So yes, there is a cry, nearby and nightly.

... and it's not human.

If you were huddled in a cold dark cave somewhere, this sound would be very distressing. It sounds almost human, and in darker times it would be a natural presumption to conclude that it must be supernatural; and this sound has been given the distinction of being a portent of death.

"If the Curlew cries ten times, cover your ears quickly, or someone you know is going to die."

It does actually resemble a girl's cry though, if you mixed it with the sound of a poorly oiled seesaw. If one were potently drunk, or had suffered a head injury, it would easily be mistaken for an actual girl in trouble. Apparently it brings some relief to learn that it's not the sound of someone being murdered...

I've got a couple of Bush Stone Curlew nesting in the front yard of where I stay. This is a fact I find quite amazing on a couple of levels, for one, that wildlife is nesting so close to where we are, and secondly nesting on the ground in easy reach! I could walk up and pick up the eggs (though I that would likely be accompanied by an attack from bird).

This bird is ground based which only flies when distressed. It's got really good camouflage, so much so that I nearly walked over it.

Not sure how one would view the presence of this bird in term of good or bad luck; but then the story goes "we shall see". These birds nesting near you could indicate that a plague of death is about to hit those you know, or it could indicate to you that they have come to you to grant you the ability to ward off death. Not heard them cry 10 times in a row yet... Often when they cry, I'm well on my way to sleep.
